Teaching Commission urges phased curriculum reform aligned with SEND changes
Published July 2, 2026
The Teaching Commission has published a report recommending that forthcoming curriculum and assessment reforms be implemented gradually to ensure proper alignment with the government's SEND reform programme. The report emphasises the need for careful phasing to avoid overwhelming schools and to ensure that changes to testing and curriculum properly accommodate the needs of children with special educational needs and disabilities. To support implementation, the Commission proposes granting schools three extra inset days in both 2027 and 2028. These additional training days would allow staff adequate time to prepare for the significant changes ahead, ensuring that curriculum adjustments and SEND provision can be integrated effectively without disrupting the quality of education for all pupils.
