Quarter of Eligible Families Missing Out on Healthy Start Nutrition Scheme
Early Years
Family Support & Early Help

A major infant feeding survey has revealed that nearly one in four mothers eligible for the Government's Healthy Start scheme are not registered to receive this vital support. The programme provides financial assistance towards essential items including infant formula, milk, fruit and vegetables, as well as free vitamins, yet uptake remains concerningly low amongst those who qualify.
Healthy Start is designed to give children the best possible nutritional foundation during pregnancy and the early years, up to age four. For local authorities and health partners, these findings underscore the importance of proactive outreach to ensure eligible families—particularly those in vulnerable circumstances—are aware of and able to access this support through children's centres, health visitors and family hubs.
Low registration rates not only represent missed opportunities for improving child health outcomes but also signal potential gaps in the join-up between national provision and local delivery. As the cost of living continues to affect household budgets, ensuring maximum take-up of Healthy Start support must be a priority for early years services working to prevent nutritional deficits and support family wellbeing.
