The climate activist and engineer Sonam Wangchuk has become the figurehead of anti-government protests in Delhi, entering the 19th day of a hunger strike demanding the resignation of the education minister. As night falls on day 18, the physical toll of consuming only water has become apparent, with Wangchuk visibly weak and unable to speak. Doctors attending to Wangchuk report that he has lost approximately 9kg from an already lean frame, warning that his body is entering a state of severe starvation. At this stage, the body begins breaking down fat and muscle, leading to extreme weakness, impaired brain function, and electrolyte imbalance. A physiotherapist is now required to massage his arms to soothe aching joints as he rests against pillows and bolsters on stage. The protest, associated with the so-called "Cockroach party," represents a significant challenge to the Modi government, with Wangchuk resisting calls to end his fast until his demands are met. The situation highlights the extreme measures being taken by activists to force policy changes at the highest levels of government.
