Recent research indicates that although awareness of this funding amongst nursery providers and childminders has achieved strong take-up rates, significant practical barriers remain in accessing these vital resources effectively. Despite the policy's ambition to close the attainment gap before children start school, the study highlights ongoing administrative and procedural challenges that prevent eligible families and settings from benefitting fully from the Premium. These obstacles risk undermining the core objective of ensuring disadvantaged children receive the targeted support they need during these crucial formative years. Lead Members for Children's Services must scrutinise local implementation of the Early Years Pupil Premium to ensure funding reaches frontline settings without bureaucratic hindrance. Addressing these practical barriers is essential to fulfilling the policy's potential in giving every child the best possible start in life, regardless of their background or circumstances.
